Is Trinibad dancehall?
Monique La Chapelle’s 2021 Caribbean Studies project at the University of the West Indies examines Trinibad as Trinidadian dancehall, emphasizing local speech, accents and lived experience. The Gleaner’s 2022 interview with Prince Swanny also describes connections with trap. These descriptions address a scene whose artists draw on several influences; they are not a fixed production recipe for every track.

How the name and scene developed
La Chapelle’s study records DJ Punz, Richard Romano, hearing the term in songs and conversations around 2017–2018 and using it for a mix. It does not identify one universally established inventor of the name. Its historical account also considers Trinidadian dancehall activity before the label became prominent.
This is an undergraduate research project with interviews, not an official certification of the genre’s birthday. Treat the naming account as a documented perspective. Earlier dancehall activity, a particular artist’s breakthrough and wider use of the name can describe different stages of development.
Prince Swanny’s account of a breakthrough
Asked about his place in the movement, Prince Swanny told The Gleaner that his 2017 song Go Fi Dem and its video brought attention to a different Trinidadian presentation of dancehall. In the same interview, he recalled performing at primary school and entering calypso competitions. His account connects a newer recording scene with a longer personal performance history.
The September 2022 interview discusses Govern and Against The World during the lead-up to Swanology. Those titles provide specific starting points for exploring his work. The article’s album plans, audience figures and claims of current popularity belong to that 2022 moment; they are not a ranking of songs today.

Where does Trinibad fit beside soca and calypso?
In 2022, Swanny described Carnival as more centered on soca and calypso while saying he had seen growing acceptance of his music since the previous major Carnival in 2020. That was his view ahead of the 2023 season, not a universal programming rule.
Explore these scenes alongside one another while keeping the labels and artists clear. A song’s appearance in a Carnival mix does not by itself establish that it is soca, and an artist’s childhood calypso performances do not determine the genre of every later release.

Find the individual song behind a mix
For a title you hear in a long mix, check the uploader’s tracklist or timestamps, then follow the named artist and recording. Keep a continuous DJ mix separate from the individual releases it contains. A playlist’s year describes its presentation and need not be the first-release year of every song.
When comparing versions, retain the displayed featured artists, remix label and release title. Use a credited artist or label upload where available. These checks help connect a useful introduction to a precise recording, rather than treating every similarly titled upload as interchangeable.
