Calypso Music — David Rudder’s response to his critics

What Rudder said the criticism prompted

Speaking to Debbie Jacob in 2013, Rudder connected the 1987 song with criticism that he was not a calypsonian. He said those reactions drew the song out of him.

He described it as a feeling that flowed into music, rather than a calculated exercise in proving the critics wrong. In that interview he identified it as the song that held the most meaning for him. That is Rudder’s personal retrospective judgment, not a ranking of all calypsos.

Three catalog entries, two release contexts

The Gilded Collection 1986–1989 contains one “Calypso Music” entry. No Restriction: The Concert contains two separately indexed entries with the same title. Both concert entries credit Rudder as performer and songwriter; their repeated title does not establish that they are duplicate audio.

The selected provider dates belong to the later carriers. Neither the 1993 compilation date nor the 1996 concert-album date replaces the 1987 song context discussed in Rudder’s interview.
