Behind the recording

Russian Satellite — Mighty Sparrow: Sputnik context and edition history

Gordon Rohlehr’s First Flight commentary connects “Russian Satellite” to a dog carried aboard Sputnik. The track header prints 1958 and names King Sparrow’s Calypso Carnival as its earlier album reference.

What is the protest about?

Rohlehr reads “Russian Satellite” as a protest against exposing a dog to the dangers of spaceflight. He discusses it beside “Mad Bomber” to illustrate Sparrow’s attention to international events, while keeping the two songs’ subjects distinct.

Which Sputnik carried the dog?

NASA records that Sputnik 2 launched on November 3, 1957, with Laika, the first animal to orbit Earth. This supplies historical context for the dog-and-satellite reference. It is separate from the booklet’s 1958 song year and does not date Sparrow’s recording session.

Keep the song year and edition year distinct

The booklet’s later reference list dates King Sparrow’s Calypso Carnival to 1959. That edition reference does not replace the song header’s 1958 year, and neither supplies a recording day.
