An older idea found a new moment
In an Observer report published June 26, 2020, Drue said the song had been written four years earlier. He felt it suited what people were experiencing as the pandemic interrupted social gatherings.
He described home as a space of comfort, enjoyment and freedom. The article reports a release earlier that month; the relative writing date does not establish an exact composition day in 2016.

Homesick and Jester’s V.I.P. Edit
On Apple’s 16-track Homesick album, the Jester V.I.P. Edit opens the sequence while “Homesick” closes it. The first credits Jester as remixer, producer and mixing engineer, alongside producer MistaRoots. The closing entry credits MistaRoots and WIZ Records as producers.
Both entries name Shawn Mitchell, Ricardo Barriteau, Devon Martin, Kitwana Israel, Emmanuel Rudder and Dale Ryan in the composition/lyrics section. Those shared credits do not erase the explicitly different version names.

Why the album date is later
The album footer carries July 30, 2020, while its closing song page retains June 9. The latter fits the interview’s June release context. These are distinct catalog fields, not a reason to move the song’s origin to the album’s later date.
