Start listeningBehind the music
Denyse Plummer’s career moved through professional hotel singing, recorded pop, calypso and gospel. In her 2008 Newsday interview, she described being born in St James and growing up in Diego Martin, and credited her father, Black Stalin and Lord Kitchener among her musical influences. She recalled singing professionally at Chaconia Inn before becoming a recording artist and calypsonian. Her own suggested introductions were Nah Leaving, Heroes and Together Right Here; Heroes and Nah Leaving are associated with her 2001 National Calypso Monarch victory. Her family confirmed her death in August 2023. The listening links here explore her later gospel repertoire through Ah Cyah Leave Him and Safe On the Inside. The former must be distinguished from the earlier calypso Nah Leaving. These available digital editions cover only part of a career whose earlier recordings require further catalog reconciliation.
