Trinidad and Tobago
Winston Bailey’s calypso career, from Les Coteaux to a distinctive stage identity.
Behind the music
Shadow was Winston Mc Garland Bailey, whose upbringing in Les Coteaux, Tobago, is central to UWI’s account of his musical beginnings. The tribute recalls his introduction to guitar in Charlotteville through Joseph Kerr, known as Bar Joe, before he moved to Trinidad to pursue calypso. His stage identity included a dark jacket or cape and a broad-brimmed hat. The same institutional account connects Bass Man with his 1974 Road March win, Scratch Meh Back and What’s Wrong With Me with the 2000 Calypso Monarch title, and Stranger with the following year’s Road March and Soca Monarch results. The D’Hardest listening entry comes from a single edition whose platform credits name Winston Bailey as composer.
