Behind the music

The story so far.

Midnight Groovers is a Dominican cadence-lypso band associated with Grand Bay. Singer Phillip “Poppa Chubby” Mark and his brother, guitarist Marcel Mark, are central figures in its history. In a 2024 interview, Chubby described combining cowbell, tambourine, triangle and drums, and adapting traditional songs to the band’s rhythms. Mondo Local’s account of the October 27, 2024 World Creole Music Festival performance records a set including Talon Haut, Anita, La Paix Nou Lay and Coco Sec, with Michele Henderson joining on backing vocals for that appearance. Chubby also discussed revisiting older reggae recordings for a compilation. Talon Haut and Anita are two selected listening points. Their current provider editions include later collections and reissues, so those edition dates do not establish when the songs were first written or recorded.
