Behind the music

The story so far.

Ophelia Marie is a cadence-lypso singer and songwriter whose career connects Dominica with the French Caribbean. In her 2016 interview with The Sun, she recalled being born in Curaçao to Dominican parents and moving to Pointe Michel at nine. Watching Barbara Bully perform with Swinging Stars helped inspire her own ambition to sing onstage. Her early album Ophelia was produced by Gordon Henderson with support from McCarthy Marie. Ophelia recalled writing Aie Dominique in response to troubling events in Dominica, then trying a cadence-lypso setting at Henderson’s encouragement. Aie Dominique and Chanson d’amour are the selected listening examples here. They appear on later provider collections, whose dates are kept separate from the songs’ earlier histories. Her songwriting account emphasizes experiences from her own life and the lives of others.
