Behind the music
The story so far.
Shurwayne Winchester is a soca performer and songwriter from Tobago. Newsday’s September 2022 report on the Scarborough riddim introduced him as a Tobagonian former Soca Monarch champion and featured his To Be Gonian, a song welcoming listeners to the island. In that report, producer Anthony Chow Lin On, known as Chinese Laundry, recalled that Winchester came to his studio to work on another project, was told about a riddim in progress that the producer wanted to call Scarborough, and went on to write To Be Gonian with him. A December 2022 Caribbean Today report on Fire Down Town, his release for Carnival 2023, noted his performances on Tobago Carnival casts that October. Platform credits for Don’t Stop and The Band Coming list Winchester as both performer and songwriter.
